Waqrapukara

Cusco, Peru
Full day

Some archaeological sites are built into the landscape. Waqrapukara seems to rise directly from it.

Perched on a dramatic rocky promontory above deep Andean ravines, this remarkable pre-Hispanic complex combines monumental stone structures, agricultural terraces and natural rock formations that resemble a pair of horns. Far from Cusco’s busiest tourist circuits, the site offers a journey into a quieter and less-traveled part of the region.

Reaching Waqrapukara requires a hike through remote highland scenery, where rolling grasslands, towering cliffs and vast mountain horizons accompany the trail. The reward is a place where history and geography appear inseparable, inviting visitors to appreciate both the ingenuity of its builders and the striking environment they chose.

Itinerary

Where ancient stone meets the edge of the Andes
  • Early Morning – Departure From Cusco: We begin the day with an early pick-up from your hotel in Cusco and travel southeast through the Andean countryside.
  • As we leave the city, the scenery gradually changes to open fields, traditional villages and rolling mountains. The journey takes us toward the province of Acomayo, a region known for its rural landscapes and lesser-visited archaeological heritage.
  • Along the way, our guide will introduce the historical and cultural background of the area, preparing us for the remarkable site waiting ahead.
  • Breakfast And Journey To The Trailhead: We stop for breakfast at a local establishment before continuing by vehicle toward the designated starting point of the hike.
  • The final section of the drive follows rural mountain roads, with expansive views of the surrounding highlands. Upon arrival, we organize our belongings, receive instructions from our guide and prepare to begin the walk.
  • The Hike Through the Andean Highlands: The trail takes us across open grasslands and uneven mountain terrain, surrounded by the immense scale of the Andes.
  • Along the way, we may encounter grazing livestock, small rural settlements and wide valleys shaped by centuries of wind and water. The route gradually brings us closer to the rocky promontory where Waqrapukara stands.
  • Although the hike is not exceptionally long compared with multi-day treks, the altitude and terrain can make it physically demanding. We will maintain a steady pace, allowing time for short breaks and photographs.
  • Waqrapukara – A Fortress Above the Abyss: Upon reaching the archaeological complex, the landscape changes dramatically. Massive rock formations rise above the surrounding ravines, creating a natural setting unlike many other archaeological sites in Cusco.
  • We explore the stone structures, terraces, ceremonial spaces and architectural remains that reveal the importance of this place before the Spanish conquest.
  • The name Waqrapukara is commonly associated with the Quechua words for “horn” and “fortress,” referring to the distinctive horn-like formations that crown the site.
  • During the guided visit, we learn about the site's archaeological significance and its relationship with the surrounding landscape. From selected viewpoints, the deep canyon and distant mountains create an extraordinary backdrop for photographs.
  • There will be time to appreciate the scenery, explore the accessible areas and enjoy the atmosphere of this remote historical sanctuary.
  • Return Along the Mountain Trail: After the visit, we begin our walk back toward the trailhead.
  • The return journey follows the same highland landscape, offering another opportunity to appreciate the open valleys and rugged terrain. Once we reach our vehicle, we prepare for the drive back toward Cusco.
  • Lunch and Return to Cusco: Depending on the schedule and route, we stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing the return journey.
  • We travel back through the Andean countryside and arrive in Cusco in the late afternoon or evening, depending on road conditions and the pace of the hike.
