Rainbow Mountain – Vinicunca

Cusco, Peru
Full day

There is a point on the trail where the landscape begins to change. The familiar green tones of the Andean countryside give way to shades of red, ochre, gold and earth, spreading across the mountainside like natural brushstrokes.

The journey to Vinicunca is not a simple viewpoint visit. It is an early start, a demanding high-altitude walk and a gradual passage through one of the most striking landscapes surrounding Cusco.

Along the route, the trail crosses remote Andean scenery, grazing alpacas and llamas, highland communities and wide-open valleys beneath some of the highest peaks of the region. The final ascent leads to the famous Rainbow Mountain, where the mineral-rich layers of the earth create its distinctive colors.

Itinerary

Early departure from Cusco
  • Early departure from Cusco: The day begins very early with your pick-up from your hotel in Cusco.
  • We leave the city behind and travel south through the Andean countryside. As the road climbs, the landscape gradually becomes more open, with small villages, agricultural fields and mountains appearing along the route.
  • The journey takes us toward the district of Cusipata, where we stop for breakfast.
  • Breakfast in the Andes: We enjoy a simple breakfast before continuing toward the starting point of the hike.
  • This is also a good moment to prepare for the altitude, organize your personal belongings and make sure you have everything you need for the walk.
  • The trail to Vinicunca: From the trailhead, we begin our hike toward Rainbow Mountain.
  • The walk takes place at high altitude, so the pace is steady and adapted to the conditions. Along the way, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. Wide valleys, grazing llamas and alpacas, red earth and snow-covered peaks create a landscape that feels far removed from the city.
  • The final section is the most demanding part of the route. With the mountain in sight, we continue upward until reaching the viewpoint.
  • Vinicunca – The Rainbow Mountain: Reaching Vinicunca marks the highest point of the journey.
  • From the viewpoint, the famous colored slopes stretch across the landscape, with the imposing Ausangate mountain visible in the distance on clear days.
  • Your guide will explain the geological and geographical characteristics responsible for the mountain's distinctive coloration while you have time to take photographs and enjoy the surrounding scenery.
  • There is no need to rush this moment. After the climb, the viewpoint offers an opportunity to simply pause and take in the scale of the Andes.
  • Return to the trailhead: We begin the descent along the same route.
  • The return walk is generally easier, although the altitude can still make the journey physically demanding. Once we reach the trailhead, our transportation will be waiting for us.
  • Lunch and return to Cusco: We continue toward Cusipata, where we stop for lunch.
  • Afterwards, we begin the drive back to Cusco, arriving in the city in the afternoon or early evening, depending on road and weather conditions.
