Q’eswachaka

Cusco, Peru
Full day

Every year, a remarkable transformation takes place in the southern Andes. Families from nearby Quechua communities gather to renew a bridge made entirely from woven plant fibers, preserving a construction tradition that has survived for centuries.

Q’eswachaka is more than an ancient crossing over the Apurímac River. It represents a collective commitment to ancestral knowledge, community cooperation and cultural continuity. Using techniques passed down through generations, local residents work together to create the ropes, dismantle the old structure and weave a new bridge by hand.

This full-day journey takes you through remote Andean landscapes, traditional villages and archaeological viewpoints before reaching one of Peru’s most extraordinary examples of living Inca heritage.

Itinerary

A living thread connecting the past and present
  • Early Morning – Departure From Cusco: We begin the journey with an early pick-up from your hotel in Cusco.
  • Leaving the city behind, we travel southeast through the Andean countryside, passing agricultural fields, small towns and highland landscapes that gradually become more remote.
  • Our route takes us toward the province of Canas, an area known for its traditional communities and strong connection to Quechua heritage.
  • Breakfast in the Andean Countryside: We stop at a local restaurant for breakfast before continuing toward the communities surrounding Q’eswachaka.
  • During the drive, our guide will introduce the history of the Inca road network, the importance of traditional engineering and the cultural practices that have helped preserve the bridge over time.
  • The Four Lagoons – Water and Mountain Landscapes
  • We continue through the countryside toward the scenic lagoons of the region.
  • Depending on the route and road conditions, we visit viewpoints around Pampamarca, Asnacqocha, Acopia and the surrounding highland waters.
  • Each stop reveals a different perspective of the Andean landscape, with open grasslands, mountain slopes, traditional settlements and calm waters reflecting the changing sky.
  • These short visits provide time for photographs and a closer appreciation of the region's natural scenery.
  • Q’eswachaka – The Last Inca Rope Bridge
  • We continue toward the Apurímac River canyon, where Q’eswachaka spans the gorge between rocky cliffs.
  • Made from woven ichu grass and other plant fibers, the bridge is renewed annually by local communities using traditional techniques. Its construction reflects a sophisticated understanding of materials, tension and collective labor.
  • At the site, our guide will explain the bridge's historical importance and the community traditions associated with its renewal. You will have time to observe its structure, take photographs and appreciate the impressive setting above the river.
  • When access conditions and local regulations permit, visitors may have the opportunity to cross the bridge. Crossing is optional and subject to safety restrictions at the site.
  • The bridge's continued existence is a powerful example of how intangible cultural heritage can remain part of everyday community life rather than becoming only a memory of the past.
  • The Apurímac River Canyon
  • After visiting the bridge, we take time to appreciate the surrounding canyon and its dramatic geological formations.
  • The river below has carved a deep passage through the mountains, creating a striking contrast between the rocky cliffs and the highland plateau above.
  • This viewpoint offers an opportunity to pause, take photographs and reflect on the ingenuity required to build a crossing in such a challenging landscape.
  • Lunch and Return to Cusco
  • We stop for lunch at a local restaurant before beginning the return journey.
  • The drive back passes through the same Andean countryside, offering another look at the rural communities and mountain scenery of southern Cusco.
  • We expect to arrive in Cusco in the late afternoon or evening, depending on road conditions and the day's schedule.
