Palcoyo Mountain

Cusco, Peru
Full day

The Andes rarely follow a single line. At Palcoyo, the mountains unfold in layers, with red, copper, green and golden tones stretching across the highland landscape.

Far from the busiest routes, this journey leads into one of the most unusual corners of the Cusco region. Instead of a single viewpoint, Palcoyo offers a collection of colorful mountain ridges, broad valleys and the striking formation known as the Stone Forest.

The journey combines a scenic drive through remote Andean communities with a relatively short high-altitude walk, making it an excellent alternative for travelers who want to experience the extraordinary colors of the Andes without undertaking a long and demanding hike.

Itinerary

A landscape shaped in layers of color
  • Early morning – Leaving Cusco behind: The day begins early with hotel pick-up in Cusco.
  • We travel south through the Andean countryside, passing small villages, agricultural fields and mountain landscapes that gradually become more remote as we gain altitude.
  • The road itself becomes part of the experience, revealing a quieter side of the Cusco region far from the city's main tourist routes.
  • Breakfast in the Andes: We stop at a local restaurant for breakfast before continuing toward the starting point of the walk.
  • After breakfast, we continue by vehicle through the highlands, passing traditional communities and expansive valleys.
  • Palcoyo – The colors of the mountains: Upon reaching the trailhead, we begin a gentle walk toward the Palcoyo mountain viewpoints.
  • The route is considerably shorter than the traditional Vinicunca hike, but the altitude still requires a slow and steady pace.
  • As we move higher, the landscape begins to reveal its characteristic colors. Different mineral layers have created shades ranging from deep red and copper to green, yellow and earthy tones.
  • Unlike a single mountain viewpoint, Palcoyo presents several colorful ridges spread across the surrounding landscape.
  • Your guide will explain the geological characteristics of the area while pointing out the mountains and valleys that surround the trail.
  • The stone forest: We continue toward the Stone Forest, one of the most unusual formations in the area.
  • Tall rock formations rise from the mountainside, creating a natural landscape shaped over time by erosion and changing weather conditions.
  • From the higher viewpoints, the panorama extends across the Andean highlands, with the imposing Ausangate mountain visible in the distance on clear days.
  • There will be time to take photographs, rest and enjoy the scenery before beginning the return walk.
  • Return to the Valley: We descend toward the vehicle and begin our journey back through the highlands.
  • The return drive offers another perspective of the remote landscapes and communities that surround Palcoyo.
  • Lunch and return to Cusco: We stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing toward Cusco.
  • After lunch, we begin the final part of the journey, arriving in the city during the afternoon or early evening, depending on road and weather conditions.
