Maras & Moray

Cusco, Peru
Half day

In the highlands of the Sacred Valley, the landscape holds two remarkable examples of how people have learned to work with nature. One is a vast network of white salt pools cascading down a mountainside; the other is a series of concentric terraces descending into a natural depression in the earth.

This journey to Maras and Moray connects two very different expressions of Andean ingenuity. At Moray, the Incas transformed the shape of the land into an extraordinary agricultural landscape. At the Maras salt mines, a natural underground spring continues to feed thousands of shallow pools, where salt is collected using traditional methods.

Between mountain views, rural communities and ancient techniques that remain relevant today, this route offers a closer look at the relationship between the Andean people and the resources that sustain their lives.

Itinerary

Salt, circles and the intelligence of the Andes
  • Departure From Cusco – Into The Andean Countryside: We begin the tour with hotel pick-up in Cusco and travel northwest toward the Sacred Valley.
  • As we leave the city, the road passes through open countryside, agricultural fields and small Andean communities. The scenery gradually reveals the broad valleys and mountain slopes that characterize this part of the Cusco region.
  • During the drive, our guide will introduce the cultural and agricultural importance of the area before we reach our first destination.
  • Moray – The Inca Agricultural Laboratory: Our first stop is Moray, an archaeological complex known for its enormous circular terraces built into a natural depression.
  • From the viewpoints above the site, the terraces appear as a series of rings descending toward the center. Their shape, depth and orientation create different environmental conditions at different levels.
  • Although the exact purpose of Moray is still debated, it is widely associated with Inca agricultural experimentation and the study of growing conditions. The complex demonstrates an impressive understanding of the relationship between terrain, temperature and cultivation.
  • During the guided visit, you will have time to appreciate the site's unusual design, learn about its possible agricultural uses and photograph the terraces from different angles.
  • Through The Maras Countryside: We continue through the rural landscapes surrounding the town of Maras.
  • Along the way, traditional houses, cultivated fields and mountain scenery reveal a quieter side of the region. This part of the journey offers an opportunity to observe the countryside beyond the main archaeological attractions.
  • Depending on the route and schedule, there may be time for photographs before reaching the salt mines.
  • Maras Salt Mines – A Mountainside Made Of Salt: Our next destination is the remarkable salt-mining complex of Maras.
  • Thousands of shallow pools cover the mountainside, creating a striking pattern of white, cream and earthy tones. The pools are supplied by a naturally salty spring, and local families channel the water into individual evaporation ponds.
  • As the water evaporates under the sun, salt crystals form and are collected. The process depends on weather conditions and has been maintained through generations of local knowledge.
  • During the visit, you will learn how the system works, why the landscape is so unusual and how salt production continues to support the surrounding community.
  • The contrast between the white pools, the brown mountain slopes and the distant Andes makes this one of the most distinctive photographic locations in the Sacred Valley.
  • Return To Cusco: After exploring the salt mines, we begin our return journey to Cusco.
  • We travel back through the Andean countryside, concluding the tour with a closer understanding of the region's agricultural heritage, traditional production methods and remarkable landscapes.
